Another birth occurred with a client yesterday morning but this one arrived at the hands of a surgeon. Momma was from Nigeria and here to attend school, husband back home waiting for news of his son's birth. Baby was breech at 38 weeks. We tried having a chiropractor adjust mom specifically to help turn the baby and then followed up with moxibustion. Baby would turn vertex, then go back to breech, vertex and back to breech.
When her water released on Saturday night, unfortunately baby was back in a breech position. I tried to ascertain for sure but baby was floating up so high it was hard to palpate body parts. So we waited for labor to help baby move down, get some dilation going and just see. Dilation never happened, baby moved down just enough so that heart tones came below the belly button and made me question whether baby was breech or just posterior? After water had been ruptured for over 24 hours mom had just enough of a rise in her temperature that we decided to go in. Ultrasound confirmed baby was breech so they did a cesarean. Baby Lincoln was frank breech and wasn't that big (7 lb 14 oz) but he just did not descend and dilation did not occur. Cord was wrapped around his neck twice and that could have been a factor, but momma also had a pelvis that was slightly rotated inward on one side which also could have kept baby from feeling comfortable in a head down position. Who knows? Either was he was what a mentor midwife refers to as an NCO baby (Not Coming Out)
I stayed with mom at the hospital through surgery and recovery room. A lovely IBCLC made sure baby was brought in to mom right away and established skin to skin and nursing, which was lovely to watch. So happy mom got to do that in the hospital/surgery environment. That doesn't happen often enough.
Baby Lincoln is quite handsome:

Midwife went 50 something hours without much sleep so I really crashed last night and today I've had to play catchup with missed appointments from yesterday. So I'm recovered now and waiting on the next little one who is should make their appearance any day now.
